In view of penalties raised on electricity bills for low power factor and a constant rise in power tariff, it is imperative for the business-oriented establishments to install the APFC system to avoid penalties and saving energy cost.

Power factor is the ratio between the actual load power (KW) and apparent load power (KVA) it is a measure of how effectively the current is being converted into useful work output and more particularly is a good indicator of the effect of the load current on the efficiency of the supply system. For example, in the inductive type of loads (Coil / Transformer based components) energy Supplied is not fully converted into work done. The load drawn in terms of Apparent Power (KVA) is more than that of the Active Power (KW) Which depends upon the load (inductive type), due to this the negative power is created in terms of Reactive Power (KVAr). These negative current pulls down the electrical efficiency, this factor is known as Power Factor.
Need for the APFC…

Low Power Factor leads to poor power efficiency there by increasing the apparent power drawn from the distribution network this results in overloading of Transformer, Cables & other distribution devices within the Industry or consumer area. An apt power factor control system ensures optimum power for the running loads.

In view of constantly rising power tariff and the penalties charged by the State Electricity Board, it is incumbent for any HT / LT Consumer to install an apt APFC system for cut down the cost.

Low Power Factor penalty
Below 0.85 lag up to 0.75 penalty @ 1% of the current consumption charges for every reduction of 0.01 PF from 0.85 and further below 0.75 penalty @ 1.5% will be charged.
